Experimental Surgery Unit

VHIR offers a veterinary position for the Experimental Surgery Unit (ESU). ESU belongs to the VHIR pre-clinical core-facilities and their expertise are: preclinical animal models (pig, sheep and rabbit) for research and teaching purposes, anaesthesia, analgesia and resuscitation protocols and pre and post-operative animal care and welfare. ESU offers integral preclinical imaging services (fluoroscopy, ultrasound), ethics committee assistance, has an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system certification and Certification AAALAC - Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care.

VHIR Core Facilities provide services to the scientific community to have access to specialised services of preclinical and clinical models of human diseases

JOB DESCRIPTION
Education and qualifications:

Required:
 Degree in veterinary medicine
 Hold the accreditations according the Ministerial Order ECC/566/2015, of 20th March and to Directive 2010/63/EU: b, c d and f Function
 High level of English.
Desired:
 Quality system management.
 Knowledge of the regulation, law and ethical aspects related to the animal experimentation.

Experience and knowledge:
Required:
 Experience working with experimental animals (specifically rabbits, sheep and pigs).
 Experience in management of other species.
 Experience in experimental surgeries.
 Experience with research procedures or veterinary clinic.

Desired:
 Veterinary anaesthesia experience
 Experience working under quality management systems (ISO9001). Knowledge of other quality systems will also be considered.
 License of supervisor of radioactive installations
 Informatics skills at intermediate/advanced level.
 Excellent teamwork, relational and communication skills are strongly required.
 Proactive, rigorous, well organised person, able to work autonomously, committed to the tasks required by the position and excellent problem-solving skills.
 Strong customer orientation and service vocation are a must.
 Willing to learn, flexibility, adaptability and resilience.

Main responsibilities and duties:
 Daily monitoring of animals´ health.
 Protocols of pre-surgical conditions, anaesthesia, analgesia and euthanasia with different animal models.
 Pre and postoperative care of the animals.
 Monitoring and improvement of animal welfare.
 Data collection and monitoring as well as analysis of results.
 Supervision and coordination of caretakers and technicians´ work.
 Veterinary advice and support to users with the experimental procedures.
 Supervision of in situ environmental parameters of the installation as well as the proper functioning of the housing equipment.

Labour conditions:
 Full-time position: 40h/week, from 8 am to 17h (with flexibility for the duration of surgeries).
 Starting date: March 2023.
 Gross annual salary: starting from 32.000 euros (Remuneration will depend on experience and skills. Salary ranges are consistent with our Collective Agreement pay scale)
 Contract: permanent.
